Meditation. It can be a daunting prospect for beginners, but it is not something to be feared. You don’t need to be a monk hermitting away on a distant mountain, or sitting still for hours at a time; a meditation practice is something anyone can access and it’s probably easier to start than you think! Plus, the benefits are huge.
Simply put, meditation is training the awareness to focus on something. This (the object of focus) could be the breath, the body, a mantra, or another distinct object. Meditation is a way to train attention and to get beyond reflexive thinking. It allows us to step back from our thoughts and notice patterns. Over time, we can then notice when our thoughts consume us and we realise our thoughts do not have to control us. As a result, meditation promotes physical relaxation and calm, increased energy and sharpened concentration. It can help us recognise the signs of stress and anxiety and help us to deal with them.
This short class here is a lovely introduction; perfect if you’re new to meditation or need a short practice to fit into your daily schedule.
